fuel for fire: a notebook of mostly found (but sometimes original) things that nourish me.
Dismayed upon learning that most store-bought loaves of bread (the affordable ones, anyway) include High Fructose Corn Syrup, I decided to make my own.
Mmmmm… It’s still cooling, so I can’t try it yet, but our home smells so yummy right now.  It was an incredibly easy recipe, found here.

I found this picture doing a flickr search for Mt. Hood, since we’re going there this weekend.  This is my favorite photograph of Portland.  It perfectly captures the way that I feel when I’m driving into the city at night.  I love the view of the mountain.  It reminds me of how when I moved here, I would gasp everytime I glimpsed the white tip of the moutain on the edge of the skyline.  It always felt like my heart was exploding, it was so incredibly beautiful and so different from anything I had ever seen in New York.

the Amelie Trailer.  Years later, and it still brings me so much joy.  The colors, the music, the language, the story, the setting.   My dvd of it cracked and is unwatchable, but even just this little series of images from the film makes me feel breathless.

sweetness.

8 things i love most about violet, at five months old

01.  The way you nestle into me when you’re sleepy.  Sometimes you grab my hand and squeeze it.  It makes me feel so loved.

02.  You’re learning to sit up now.   It’s so neat to watch you sit quietly and play with your toys.  I like to see which ones you choose.  It’s neat to watch you slowly, slowly growing independent.  It makes me feel proud of you.

03.  You’re so solid. When I hold you, I can’t believe that I used to worry that I might break you if I held you the wrong way.  Your body is growing so quickly.  Your muscles and bones grow stronger every day.

04.  The way you let out a little sigh of pleasure when I put you down into the warm bathwater.  You sigh as if you’re shaking off the day, as if a warm bath was exactly what you needed to relax and decompress. It’s the cutest and the sweetest sound.

05.  You giggle and laugh at everything now.  Before, I would try so hard just for a little smile.  Now, I know all of your most ticklish spots and you reward us with giggles and deep belly laughs so easily.  Sometimes it’s just the way I turn my head, or raise my eyebrows, or it’s a game of patty-cake, and it’s so incredibly contagious and we are a pile of giggles and laughter and it feels as if the joy will never, ever end.

06.  You are fascinated with watching us eat.  You stare and wave your arms.  Sometimes you open your mouth a little, as if you’re begging for a taste, a morsel.  You’re not supposed to eat real food just yet, but we gave you a drop of apple juice, just to see what you would do, and you were so happy and excited.  Your little tongue came out, wondering, looking for more.  It was so sweet.

07.  You are so aware of every noise and every movement. This can be frustrating when you’re nursing and want to start and stop every time you hear a sound or want to look at something. Mostly it’s really neat to watch how aware you are. The phone ringing, the rain falling, daddy talking, mama cooking dinner. Every sound and sight seems to electrify you with curiosity and you want to absorb, understand, see it all.

08.  You are also so incredibly fascinated with texture and the way things feel on your skin.  The other afternoon, we had a pile of blankets around you, and your hands kept reaching from fabric to fabric, trying to touch each one, your hands asking questions, the colors and the patterns and the feeling of it all.
